ClassAdvanced Children’s/YA Writing: Is Your Novel Submission-Ready?
Are you wrapping up your revisions on a middle grade or young adult novel? This class will help you create and polish a submission package for your upcoming agent search—with an emphasis on writing craft as well as marketing savvy.
You’ll learn how to create and then use your query letter, synopsis, and opening pages as key tools for a final revision crosscheck. The process of drafting a synopsis, for example, is an excellent way to identify structural problems and issues with your novel’s character arc. We’ll spend a sizable portion of class time critiquing, focusing on the opening pages of student manuscripts, as these often provide major clues to problems in the work as a whole. Craft discussions will be shaped by the questions that arise as the class considers these opening pages.
In today’s competitive children’s/YA marketplace, your manuscript needs to be as polished as possible to attract an agent’s attention. This class will be a big step in helping you become submission-ready.
Note: to get the most out of the class, students should be in the “final polish” stage of writing a novel for children or young adults. Class is capped at 12 students. Please bring 13 copies of the first 5 pages of your manuscript, double spaced, to the first class.
