Advanced Poetry: Imagery and Abstraction
Beauty. Truth. Grief. Joy. Time. Freedom. Love. How do poet's address their deepest emotions without shouting, wailing, or bemoaning fate at every line break? How do poets address life's intangibles in ways that keep a solid slab of cement under a reader's feet? By giving color, height, and heft to emotion and abstraction by making everyday images carry the weight of thought and feeling.
In this advanced poetry session, we will spend the day earning our poetic abstractions by working on the imagery we use to define emotions and ideas that otherwise wouldn't hold their own shape. We'll read poems that inventively intertwine imagery and abstraction and discuss line by line how the poems work with all the senses to make the intangible tangible. We'll consider ways emotion can move a poem forward or stop a poem's progress (35% discussion). Then, we'll complete writing exercises that encourage using sensory detail as the backbone and heart of a poem (35%). There will be time at the end of the class to share your work with others (30%).
A small copy fee of $3 will be required for this class.
