Through in-class reading, discussion, and generative writing practice, this class will help participants understand the craft of poetry as well as unleash their own creativity. During the class, we will discuss poetic form, including couplets, haiku, and free verse, and we’ll learn about meter and rhyme.
We’ll read several examples of poetry as we get to know many different poets, and we’ll practice writing new forms. The poets we will discuss will be remarkably diverse, from Langston Hughes to Gwendolyn Brooks to Maya Angelou, Patricia Smith, Chen Chen, Danez Smith, and Terrance Hayes. Please come ready to write; you’ll learn aspects of craft while putting them into practice with new poems of your own!
*Eligible for the fall intro class discount.
