ClassBeyond the Basics
Novelist and short story writers alike will benefit from this course that looks at the major fiction craft topics, introducing techniques that go beyond the basics. The use of truisms to enrich theme. Fragments for a rhythmic voice. Free indirect style in third-person point of view. Terminology for verisimilitude. Round characterization through dramatization of flaws and failings.
Writers we’ll read to see these techniques in action include Deborah Eisenberg, Colson Whitehead, Thomas McGuane, Joan Silber, and Don DeLillo. We’ll mix in some lesser-known writers too, like Leonora Carrington and Mark Leyner.
For the workshop component, students can submit story drafts or chapter drafts of 15 pages twice throughout the course. Students are required to provide written feedback on their cohort’s work. No class the week of July 4.
