Fiction Graphic

Looking at established and rising writers from Alice Munro and Jhumpa Lahiri to Jamel Brinkley and Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, this course will unpack the underlying architecture and elements of short fiction, leading to a greater understanding of why certain stories feel like novels and why certain stories are uniquely situated for shorter forms. Attendees will practice developing story arc seeds, experiment with beginnings, and consider the tenuous (but important) role that backstory can play in providing texture and character development within a few thousand words.
