ClassCrafting Character-Driven Stories
Stories may have big ideas, incredible settings, and fantastic plots, but it?s the characters that make the words on the page really come alive. This class will cover a character-driven approach to storytelling that generates rich, complex characters first, and then constructs a story around their needs.
We will study a variety of ways to introduce characters into a story, exploring techniques that work for a variety of writing styles. We'll show ways to bring depth to both settings and character, lending complexity to your characters by changing the way they experience their world. We'll explore the works of modern master storytellers to see how they drive stories forward with character conflict and craft worlds through their characters' eyes.
Writers of all levels of experience are welcome but come ready to write. Each student will leave the class with an introduction for a fleshed-out character and a conflict that will drive the story forward. Bring a snack, and we'll eat and take breaks as needed.
