ClassCrash Course in the Craft of the Personal Essay
Writing about your own life is exciting, rewarding, and difficult. A central challenge is to find enough distance from your own experience to gain the perspective needed to transform that experience into art. We achieve this distance via the writing process—personal essays can require many rounds of revision before they even reveal their true subject.
This class will provide an introduction to the genre of personal essays and a crash course in the craft tools essential to that process. We'll look at a diverse array of texts and use them as inspiration to generate our own writing. You should leave class with a handful of ideas, some writing, and both the inspiration and skills to continue with at least one, and hopefully more, personal essays.
There will be a $3 copy fee, and no reading required before class.
