Whether you're an emerging writer interested in writing about your personal experiences or a seasoned essay or memoir writer, the prospect of starting a new personal writing project is daunting. Relying on exploratory writing techniques to develop scenes, images, and ideas into a "zero draft" of a rich text with the potential to be refined into your goal project, we'll focus on writing process and creative nonfiction tenets as well as how to revise and refine your final product. This single-session class will cover developing a strong essay topic, the key craft points to keep in mind for personal writing, and tips on revising for your best work.

Drawing from both 10+ years of experience as an editor of personal essays in digital media and MFA-level craft workshops in literary spaces, this class aims to encourage a focus on developmental process over product while leaving the class with the tools for a strong draft of an eventually publishable piece.
