ClassDialogue, Gesture, and Staging
Through careful analysis of dialogue—what people say, how they listen, when they don't—and how both conflict and intimacy arise in these moments, we'll create dynamic scenes in our fiction. Then we'll enrich them through adding gestures that bring the characters to life, while emphasizing, complicating, or even undercutting their words. Finally, we'll take a deep dive into staging, using subtext to make the scenes even more resonant.
Sample texts will include work by writers such as Laleh Khadivi, Porochista Khakpour, Kiese Laymon, Jami Nakamura Lin, Carmen Maria Machado, Leslie Marmon Silko, Z.Z. Packer, and Weike Wang. Expect in-depth discussion as well as prompts and writing exercises to put the ideas to immediate and tangible use.
