Personal essays can take on all kinds of shapes and structures. From the traditional narrative structure to experimental forms such as braided, lyric, fragmented, and hermit crab essays, how do you decide on a structure that is right for the content of your essay? In this class, we will read essays by T Kira Madden, Samantha Irby, Melissa Febos, Lidia Yuknavitch, Jaquira Diaz, and more. Each week, we will explore different essay structures, discuss how they impact the reader’s experience of the essay, and experiment with effectively executing our own structures. The class will provide readings, writing prompts, and feedback on one essay up to 10 pages.

Flex Classes are completely online and asynchronous, meaning you can complete the course work on your own schedule. They do run week-to-week so a cohort of students can work together, but you can log in any time during the week. There are no live meetings to schedule around, so these classes are ideal for people with unpredictable schedules. Because you can sign on any time during the week to complete your tasks, and because there is no live video conferencing, they are also a good option for people with unreliable Internet access. Loft staff will provide you with your WetInk classroom log-in information within 48 hours of the class start date.
