ClassFull Color Fiction: Representative Writing Techniques for Afrofuturism and Speculative Fiction
Perhaps you've got an idea for a story, but the background demographics of the character(s) differ than your own. Perhaps your characters share your identity attributes, but you’re looking for engaging ways to incorporate your own experiences. Representing diversity in Afrofuturism and speculative fiction demands attention to certain details and techniques to avoid tokenization. This session highlights common mistakes and explores methods to getting stories out of your head and onto the page, while creating diverse characters without tokenizing them.
This class takes place in-person, at the Loft at Open Book; all participants must be fully vaccinated, and must provide proof of vaccination before entering the classroom. Those without proof of vaccination will not be allowed into the classroom. Please plan to wear a mask during class.
