Generating Poems: Prompt & Circumstance
“Generating Poems: Prompt & Circumstance” will provide poets at all levels with the opportunity to draft poems, receive feedback, and experiment with different poetic forms and prompts. Each week will feature a selection of poems to read and discuss, several generative writing prompts, and opportunities to workshop poems for feedback from peers and the instructor.
In addition to looking at forms as a source for poetic inspiration, we will read poems by accomplished contemporary poets with an eye toward the “circumstances” of the poem. We’ll unlock a poet’s syntax, approach to a subject(s), use of line and stanza breaks, and other poetic techniques to spur our own imaginative processes. That is to say, we’ll invent prompts by investigating different poems’ features.
This class will help you keep to your new year's resolution to revitalize your commitment to writing. It will challenge you to write poems different from the ones you may have written in the past.
As a student, you’ll be responsible for submitting a poem for workshop weekly, providing thoughtful and respectful feedback to your peers’ poems, and keeping up with assigned readings and discussions.
