ClassGetting Through It: Starting AND Finishing a Novel Draft in Eight Weeks
Everyone loves the idea of writing a novel . . . until they start it. Getting Through It breaks down what you need for a novel; how to outline your book before you start it, chapter by chapter; and plot, characterization, world-building, and point of view. Class time will be dedicated to organizing your novel BEFORE you start writing so that when you're stuck you have a blueprint to return to.
There will also be brief lectures on how to build great scenes, develop characters, and create memorable settings, using examples from writers such as Toni Morrison, Celeste Ng, and Patricia Engel. We will also discuss strategies for battling writer's block, idea generation, and inspiration to write everyday, even if you're "stuck." In short, this class will not only leave you with a robust writer's toolbox to return to again and again, you will come out of it with a full draft of an original novel!
About Loft Flex Classes
Flex Classes are completely online and asynchronous, meaning you can complete the course work on your own schedule. They do run week-to-week so a cohort of students can work together, but you can log in any time during the week. There are no live meetings to schedule around, so these classes are ideal for people with unpredictable schedules. Because you can sign on any time during the week to complete your tasks, and because there is no live video conferencing, they are also a good option for people with unreliable Internet access.
