Creative Nonfiction Graphic

Truth is at the heart of creative nonfiction writing. But what role does imagination play in our lives and, in turn, our personal narratives? We imagine possibilities, alternative selves, the answers to persistent unanswered questions, and we juggle conflicting stories and incomplete information. These unknowns can present challenges when writing our lives. But by engaging our imagination, we can write more nuanced narratives and bring dynamic new energy to stalled drafts.

In this class, we will consider the boundaries of the genre and interrogate how much invention is too much, using the scale of our individual commitments to truthfulness. We will explore writing that navigates these questions, like works by Nick Flynn, John D’Gata, bell hooks, Jesmyn Ward, Sun Yung Shin, and Jenny Boully. We will consider ways to communicate, transparently, our inventions to our readers. Through writing prompts, creative generation activities, and revision strategies, we will practice writing into the grey spaces of our memories and the possibilities we invent in our waiting through the unknown. This class is well suited to those writing in either memoir or non-memoir based creative nonfiction.
