Let's Get Physical: Strategies for Bringing Characters to Life
The teaching artist has led a class on writing sex scenes—but this isn't that! Isn't it just as important to put bodies on the page when they're clothed? Making your characters tangible, making their bodies seen and smelled and heard and felt is key to making them seem like real people for your readers.
In this class, we'll look at techniques to make characters into physical beings—covering topics as wide ranging as staging, gesture, physical description, race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and pain. Sample texts will include work by writers such as Roxane Gay, Angela Flourney, Kiese Laymon, Jami Nakamura Lin, Carmen Maria Machado, Erin Kate Ryan, Z.Z. Packer, and Yoko Tawada.
You can also expect a lot of time writing, as we use prompts and exercises to put the ideas to practical use.
