ClassThe Loft Poetry Apprenticeship 2021
The time has come to gather and assemble your work. Individual poems that stand alone can, with purposeful ordering, also reinforce and illuminate each other. In this year-long apprenticeship with poet Gretchen Marquette you’ll develop your voice through customized individual mentorship as well as cohort meetings. You’ll also receive peer and teaching mentor feedback on all stages of your poetry collection and develop a supportive community of like-minded writers and readers who are eager to engage, grow, and develop as poets.
Over the course of your apprenticeship, you’ll find what anchors your collection, cultivate your gut feeling for a satisfying and strategic arc, and discover and articulate your work’s primary concerns. You will also discover how your collection stands in conversation with other good work being done in contemporary poetry.
While we had intended to meet in-person, COVID-19 made other plans. This cohort will meet via Zoom from at least the first meeting through the end of May, 2021, with the goal of meeting at the Loft at Open Book, in downtown Minneapolis, starting this summer if it is safe to do so. This is a good option if you are local to the Twin Cities, as we will transition to in-person meetings later in the year if it is safe to do so. Of course, this option may end up being virtual for all of 2021, so please be aware of this as you decide to register.
One-on-one meetings with Gretchen will also be held over the course of the year, live online via Zoom, or in person if it is safe to do so. These include one introductory meeting before the program kicks off in February, and one manuscript consultation session with Gretchen after the program concludes (and you submit your final manuscript) in December.
Your program orientation meeting is scheduled to take place Tuesday, January 26, 2021, at 6pm via Zoom.
Your final public reading will be Wednesday, January 12, 2022, at 7pm in the performance hall at The Loft/Open Book.
