We'll read speculative fiction stories from A People's Future of the United States, including authors A. Merc Rustad, Lizz Huerta, Charles Yu, and Tananarive Due. We'll draft similar stories of our own. The editors :asked for narratives that would challenge oppressive American myths, release us from the chokehold of our history, and give us new futures to believe in."

We'll engage in discussions and writing exercises geared toward uncovering our desires for a better world and how to translate those visions into fiction in compelling, non-cheesy ways. We'll learn multiple strategies for incorporating what could be into what is. Toni Cade Bambara said, "The job of the writer is to make revolution irresistible."

We're going to do just that and have fun doing so. By the end of the class, you'll have a story draft and several ideas for additional stories. We'll tell truer stories and imagine better futures we'll want to live in.

Writers of sci-fi, fantasy, horror, weird literary fiction, or anything genre defying are welcome. The teaching artist will provide (optional) feedback on your draft.
