The Loft Presents If: Speculative Memoir
What happens when we write about our own experiences through the lens of myth, fairy tale, dream, and fantasy? What new forms might we create when we allow the fantastical to color the factual? Speculative memoir is an emerging term for a genre that employs fantastical elements in creative nonfiction.
In this class, we’ll look at exciting new work in this area, like Ariel Gore’s We Were Witches and Carmen Maria Machado’s In the Dream House, while conducting our own speculative memoir experiments. Students will have the opportunity to participate in optional online workshop critiques and to submit up to 3,000 words for feedback from the teaching artist.
