Community is one of our most basic needs. Connections to people and cultures have a huge impact on the stories we tell, and how we tell them. This poetry workshop seeks to explicitly link the two. How do our communities fuel our writing, and how can our writing give life to back to them? How do our various communities interact with each other? How does this affect our own identities and concepts of self? What does it mean to write for a community as well as for ourselves? In this course, we will explore these questions and more through poetry. We will draw inspiration from authors such as Hieu Minh Nguyen, Hanif Abdurraqib, and Safia Elhillo, as well as from our communities themselves through interviews and cultural engagement. Through in-class writing and peer editing, we will ultimately produce polished work for a class chapbook and public reading that will bring our community members into our process and forge a lasting connection between the two.
