Revision and submitting can be lonely tasks if they’re not shared with others. Learn revision techniques and get over the hurdle of submitting poems as a group in this practical workshop. You’ll receive feedback on several poems and bring them through revision to get ready to submit. Revision strategies will focus on “polishing” the poem rather than breaking it down to the studs. We’ll recognize the strengths of what is already there and encourage expansion in other areas. Let’s face it—there’s no being published without submitting poems and often it’s women, people of color, and other marginalized folks that are published in lower numbers. Until the publishing industry is overhauled (we can talk about that too), we must make ourselves heard through consistent effort and very thick skin. You’ll set up a system for submitting poems to a diverse list of literary journals. Please bring some poems in progress to work on in class. Students will receive feedback on them, preparing them for submission, and will finish class with 6–8 polished poems..
