ClassSense of Adventure: Reimagining the World—Crafting Compelling Nonfiction
This class is offered as part of the Loft's Sense of Adventure theme.
This class will be an exploration of creative nonfiction, introducing students to a range of texts in the genre that explore topics as wide ranging as illness, travel, science, memoir, and more. Each class will cover a different concern in crafting lyrical nonfiction that is compelling, evocative, and responsible, and students will engage with short writing prompts in each class to kickstart their own writing.
Students will be asked to critically engage with questions of form, subject, research, and professional responsibility in writing, and will be challenged to engage reflexively with writing that can sometimes push the boundaries of the personal and political.
Writers will be challenged to engage with the work of writers from around the world and from varying perspectives, including those of LGBTQ people, disabled people, people of color, and people of varying subjectivities and interests. The class aims to get writers thinking about how we construct and are constructed by the stories we tell about ourselves and the world, and how we can reimagine the distinctions made between the personal and universal, lyricism and reportage.
About Loft Flex Classes
Flex Classes are completely online and asynchronous, meaning you can complete the course work on your own schedule. They do run week-to-week so a cohort of students can work together, but you can log in any time during the week. There are no live meetings to schedule around, so these classes are ideal for people with unpredictable schedules. Because you can sign on any time during the week to complete your tasks, and because there is no live video conferencing, they are also a good option for people with unreliable Internet access.
