Submit It Now! Selling Sci-Fi/Fantasy Short Stories
Submit your story now! Learn the secrets of submitting short stories. From market research to submission formatting to actually submitting a story, this class will walk students step-by-step through the process of sending out a short story. Writers of all genres are welcome, but the example stories and subgenres discussed are science fiction and fantasy-focused.
If students have a finished story, they will receive a developmental critique note and personalized submission suggestion from the teaching artist. A finished story is not required for the class.
Students will learn about market research, warning signs, and choosing a good match for their story. We will discuss genres, subgenres, and themed submission calls. Students will be guided in formatting their manuscript, creating support documents, submitting their story, and managing their submissions.
Students will create and receive feedback on:
* a polished, formatted story submission
* a cover letter
* an author bio
* an author photo
* a query letter
* submission tracking documents
* a Top 10 list of publication markets for their story
Students will need a laptop or tablet. A $5 copy fee is payable to the teaching artist at the beginning of the class.
