ClassTruth and Imagination in Picture Books
This class on writing picture books for children will focus on story and technique in writing fiction and nonfiction. We’ll examine narrative choices, word choices, page turns, viewpoint, and story structure in selected fiction and nonfiction examples. We’ll also look at the role of back matter in nonfiction.
Please study a minimum of 10 picture books—five fiction and five nonfiction—before class. What questions do they raise for you? Bring your questions and observations for discussion. This won’t be a manuscript critique workshop, although if you have work in progress, feel free to use it for class exercises. This class is best suited to intermediate or advanced picture book writers, since the class will not go over the basics of picture books.
