Should our stories be written as truthful essays or memoirs, or as fiction? We will explore reading and writing both creative nonfiction and fiction in this class and will attempt to discover which genre(s) you are most comfortable telling your truths in.

We will read and discuss excellent short works of fiction and creative nonfiction as springboards to our own writing, using the work of such writers as Tim O'Brien, Alice Walker, and Charles Johnson, and we'll do in-class and take home writing exercises to produce a working draft of one 8-10 page piece. It can be difficult to determine whether to write our true stories as fiction or creative nonfiction. The goal of this class if to help students decide which genre(s) they can tell their stories most comfortably.
