ClassWell Seasoned Words: Writing About Your Food Traditions/Heritage
Food is at the center of our life experience. It nourishes us, sustains us and is at the center of some of the most compelling stories we tell about who we are and where we come from.
This class will begin by looking at what makes food writing work by looking at essays and articles by writers including M.F.K. Fisher, Laurie Colwin, Amanda Hesser, Francis Lam and others. We will talk about how to open essays with evocative descriptions and vivid details. We’ll use writing exercises to help you mine your food heritage. We’ll talk about how to tell your food story in a way that holds interest and leaves the reader satisfied.
You’ll be given essay prompts and we’ll workshop three drafts. There will be guidance on revision and you will leave with a workable draft, and ideas about where to submit your essays.
