'What if...?' is the fundamental question that drives science fiction and fantasy. What if robots became sentient? What if magic was real?

In this class, we'll look at the history of the genre and its current leading voices. Emphasis will be placed on fundamentals of good writing and good science fiction in novels and short stories. We'll be covering such topics as getting the science in science fiction; world building of alien and future cultures; and the differences between character-driven and plot-driven stories.

Students will be encouraged to bring story ideas for brainstorming, and as the class progresses, finished works for critique. We'll conclude with sessions on manuscript submission, the route to publication, and how-to survive the dreaded rejection.
