ClassWriting Difference: Strategies for Developing Fictional Characters Across Diverse Backgrounds
We live in an increasingly diverse world where representation and inclusion matter. How we write our characters into our fictional worlds matters too. In this class, through the constructive lens of craft, we will explore ways of writing diverse characters. Using generative concepts, we will unpack successful ways of writing characters across not only racial and cultural divides but also our spectrum of differences, including areas such as gender, age, socioeconomic background and sexual orientation. We will examine and build on these specific concepts, some of which appear in Nisi Shawl and Cynthia Ward’s Writing the Other.
Writing exercises will be assigned in class to further explore these concepts in our personal writing. To illustrate how writers have tackled inclusivity in their own work, we will examine excerpts of short fiction and engage in lively discussion on what we read. In addition, we will touch on some problematic ways of writing "the other," especially in regard to cultural appropriation and the use of vernacular language.
Students will have the opportunity to introduce a fictional character—one that is written during the course of the class or already in their own work—and discuss how to further develop their characters. Overall, students will be challenged to rethink their approach to writing outside their experience and will learn how to write more authentic characters in the context of today’s ever-changing, complex world.
