Class Creative Nonfiction Genre Rectangle

After a universally challenging year, this class focuses on the creative process of writing through loss and unwelcome change. As Lidia Yuknavitch said in an interview, “It’s not unusual that an artistic practice would be born out of trauma.” Writing can lighten the burden, and it is just as likely to send us back to a hard place. How do we capture that experience on the page and navigate its difficulties in the writing process?

This class is for you if you are writing about any kind of loss: a death, a breakup, a lay-off, or the loss of routine or sense of self. In reading the work of Aleksander Hemon, Mary H.K. Choi, Jesmyn Ward, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Lidia Yuknavitch, and Blake Butler, among others, we’ll learn how to create a compelling narrative out of chaos, how to attain emotional honesty without becoming maudlin, and how to navigate the relationship between catharsis and craft. All readings will be available online.

Classes will be divided between discussion of readings, craft tips, in-class exercises, and workshop. Students can expect to submit up to 10 pages of their work to their peers and teaching artist for feedback in class.

All classes listed on the Loft website take place in Central Standard Time (CST); make sure you understand your time zone, and adjust accordingly
