This class is intended for writers who are ready to begin or are partway through a book-length memoir project. Students should have a clear understanding of the theme(s) and narrative arc of the project and will ideally have participated in workshop (feedback)-based classes. During the class, we will focus on broad strokes, such as structure and scene selection, as well as style and form.

Each week, students will read one to two memoir excerpts or personal essays by writers including Alexander Chee, Meredith Talusan, and Elizabeth McCracken, engaging in lively discussion on craft each week. Each student will have an opportunity to receive detailed written feedback from the teaching artist as well as their classmates. This feedback will be written on selected students' pieces weekly and will be focused on questions the text raises rather than subjective preferences. Students should expect to write up to three to five pages each week, total—both their own work, as well as written feedback on classmates’ work.
