Wordplay 2021: Fetch the Bolt Cutters

Fetch the Bolt Cutters with Melissa Febos, Kaitlyn Greenidge, and Donika Kelly

Virtual Wordplay is a presentation of St. Catherine University and Star Tribune. This event is a St. Kate's Critical Conversation.

Girls grow up hearing stories about what a woman “should” be: what’s possible for her, what gives her value, and what rules she must follow. These three authors are done hearing stories told about themselves—they’re writing their own and questioning who’s been narrating up until now.

Melissa Febos’s essays in Girlhood investigate the forces that confine girls as they become adults; Kaityn Greenidge’s Libertie: A Novel follows a character seeking release from the world’s limitations; and Donika Kelly’s poems in The Renunciations grapple with growth after trauma. Nobody speaks for us; we are our most reliable narrators.
