Lauren Oakes
Lauren E. Oakes is a conservation scientist and science writer. She earned her PhD from Stanford’s Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources and holds a BA in Environmental Studies and Visual Art from Brown University. Oakes is the author of In Search of the Canary Tree (Basic Books, 2018), which was named one of Science Friday’s Best Science Books of 2018, won second place for the 2019 Rachel Carson Environment Book Award, and was a finalist for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Communication Award. Her new book, Treekeepers: The Race for a Forested Future, investigates global reforestation. Focusing her writing on forests, climate, and our complex relationships with the natural world, Oakes has contributed to Scientific American, Emergence Magazine, Nautilus, Undark, Lit Hub, and other media outlets.
