Fiction with open book and stars

Need a kick in the pants to get that short story revised? Students with a draft of a work of short fiction (no matter how rough) who want to polish it to a place where it is "submission ready" for literary magazines and journals but need focused guidance on what to revise—and how—will find the support and structure needed in this class.

Each class will include instruction on craft, generative exercises, and thirty-minute writing sessions. (Students should also work on their story after class, but the aim of the total word count should be around 7,500 maximum.) Class size will dictate the length of excerpts to be read in-session (it will be capped small, at X students). Discussion is meant to foster community.

Please bring a rough draft of a short story (up to 7,500 words in length) to the first session and be ready to work on it over the course of this class. Students will receive peer feedback and comments from the teaching artist according to established expectations in class of “workshop etiquette.”

By the end of the class, students will have a polished draft of the short story brought to workshop and they will feel confident submitting to literary journals and zines. In the last session, we will close with how and where writers can submit their work for publication.
