ClassCold & Crystal Clear: Writing About Winter
Winter arises in many memorable works and lines in literature. Shakespeare’s “now is the winter of our discontent.” Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” The “blueblack cold” of Robert Hayden’s “Those Winter Sundays.” Clearly, the starkest of seasons is fertile ground for metaphor and meaning.
Let’s explore frozen landscapes, crystalline description, and icy characters — and how we can construct them as writers. Through close observation of how human habits and the natural world are shaped by winter, you can develop specificity and nuance in your work.
This class will offer inspiring examples of winter-themed writing, practical exercises based upon them, and clarifying group discussions. By class end, you’ll have wintry drafts, next steps for revision, and resources to kindle more cold-weather work.
All Classes listed on the Loft website take place in Central Time.
