Create Your Own Universe (for ages 9 to 11)

Welcome to the Loft's Summer Youth program at Open Book! Join us for 4 days of writing and creativity!

SESSION 1:
WELCOME TO MY WORLD
(for ages 9 to 11, with Ellen Fee)

What other worlds might exist in our universe? We will create a brand-new, imaginative planet and build all the details through a variety of writing and art projects. At the end of class, we will craft a time capsule containing all the elements of their fantasy world.

Students will explore a variety of writing styles through prompts and projects that develop their fantasy world’s setting, characters, and more. At the end of the week, we will imagine we are sending a time capsule to Earth to share our far-away planet with humans and fill and decorate our time capsule with our writing and art projects for students to take home and keep.

Students can expect to use their imaginations, work on writing and art projects, share their ideas with others, and create something totally original. Using everything we created in class, students will also be able to continue creating stories about their imagined world after the week is over.

LUNCH & ENRICHMENT:
We'll break for lunch with more activities that will inspire us to express ourselves while having fun! We may explore Gold Medal Park to seek creativity outside the classroom! Please bring a packed lunch.

SESSION 2:
PICK-A-PATH STORIES
(for ages 9 to 11, with Kat Shepherd)

In this class, we'll learn all about interactive stories where readers help choose the path.

Interactive book series keep readers turning the pages because the story changes every time. Every decision the reader makes takes the plot through unexpected twists and turns that lead to a host of exciting new endings.

Writing these kinds of stories is even more fun than reading them! This class offers the chance to plan and create pick-a-path stories of your own in a variety of genres. By the end of class, you'll walk away with your own pick-a-path book to share with family and friends.

Whether you’re writing adventures, realistic fiction, or horror, you’ll learn the secrets behind creating a thrilling interactive multi-plot story that keeps readers coming back for more!
