Creative Process with Brain

It’s All About Choices is a creative writing workshop designed for both new and experienced writers who want a supportive space to explore and strengthen their voice. This class centers the idea that writers create their best work when they have freedom—so each session offers a variety of themed prompts drawn from the workshop topics: holidays, motivation, emotional stability, and relationships. Students are encouraged to choose the prompt that speaks most to their lived experience. Before class begins, students should bring a notebook, writing utensils, and any previous work they may want to revisit.

Class time blends instruction, discussion, and workshopping. In this course, “workshopping” means sharing your writing and receiving verbal, respectful, constructive feedback from peers and the teaching artist. Feedback will focus on clarity, emotional depth, and ways to strengthen your unique voice—not on correcting style or judging content. Students are expected to participate actively, listen with intention, and support a positive creative environment.

This class will be spent generating new writing, exploring craft techniques through short guided discussions, and reflecting on the choices writers make when shaping a story. Class will conclude with a choice-based closing activity, helping students recognize growth and leave inspired to keep writing.

This class is part of a series of classes that cover the issues and traditions of writers of color and Indigenous writers and is intended for writers of color and Indigenous writers to work on their craft in a space that centers them and their work. We ask all participants to be cognizant of that core value. Minnesota human rights laws prevent the exclusion of anyone based on their identity. But if you are not a writer of color or Indigenous writer, please be mindful of the space and energy you take up in a class intended to uplift traditionally marginalized and silenced communities. Anyone being disruptive may be asked to leave.

The class is offered on a pay what you can basis with the suggested fee. Students may select the "pay what you can" option and enter any amount, including $0.

Writers of all experiences, genres and abilities are welcomed.

All Classes listed on the Loft website take place in Central Time.
