The Magic of Outlines (for Ages 15 to 18)

Welcome back to Summer Youth at the Loft! We'll spend the week writing, reading, and building community.

Learn the power of outlining and create a roadmap into your world!

Have you ever wondered how the central idea, the heart of the story or theme, profoundly changes story beats? Structure doesn't have to be boring; it is the hidden magic of a storyteller that will form the general framework of the world from inciting incident, through rising action, climax and the resolution. Together, we will deconstruct outlines of popular books and how changing the theme, would change the story.

Students will explore plot, character arcs, world building, and how it all symbiotically connects to the outline to create an action-packed and cohesive narrative. In this class, students will discover multiple ways to build an outline while working together to brainstorm, foreshadow, and find plot holes and how to solve them—all while applying an outline to a story description and opening pages.
