ClassWriting Queer Resistance Through Flash Fiction
In this fiction writing class focused on queer resistance, students will craft stories of their own and deepen their understanding of flash fiction. We’ll read multiple flash fiction stories by queer and trans writers, such as Venita Blackburn, Maddox Emory Arnold, and Tina S. Zhu. We'll discuss the choices the writers made in their work, focusing on each story’s genre, craft, and technique.
Students will be guided through several writing prompts that use these stories as examples for generating our own work. Students will have time to free write, as well as opportunities to share their work with the group. Together, we'll reflect on our experiences with writing, as well as our intentions and goals with writing fiction that centers queer and trans experiences.
Class will involve a combination of reading, discussion, individual writing time, and reflection. Students will leave the class with a deepened understanding of flash fiction, multiple writing prompts, the beginnings of several stories of their own, and a renewed sense of intention in their writing.
All classes listed on the Loft website take place in Central Time.
