ClassWriting What is Possible: Writing For Social Change (for ages 15 to 18)
Welcome to the Loft's Summer Youth program at Open Book! Join us for 4 days of writing and creativity!
Younger generations are ready and eager to start changing the world, especially right now in the United States. Issues around climate, criminal injustice, global conflicts, etc. are at the forefront of our minds and we want to speak out! The political climate is hot, and a lot of us are wondering how to use writing to make social change.
In this class, we will learn about personal essays, op-eds, writing like a reporter, and more. We'll also explore how to persuade others to join our cause, invite our readers in, and rally our supporters. Students will create one strong piece of work on an issue they care about deeply — surrounded by other young creative changemakers working as a collective.
Any student who feels confident in their piece and would like it published will be included in a digital anthology of the group's work. That anthology will be hosted on the 'Believe in What's Possible' website, a youth-led nonpartisan nonprofit working to reveal, center, and support youth leadership in Minnesota’s political processes, and possibly on the Loft's blog.
