The Loft and Springboard for the Arts Presents: The Writer’s Guide to Sourcing Images
If you’re a writer working on a picture book, email newsletter, zine, art book or literary work, you probably have an idea of what sort of images you’d like to incorporate. Whether you’re thinking about illustrations, cover art, photographs or archival materials, there are creative possibilities as well as legal and practical considerations to keep in mind. In this workshop, we’ll look at three common publishing paths and how each shapes your image options:
– Traditional publishers: What image permissions and licenses they may expect you to secure, what they will handle themselves, how ownership is determined, and how all of this is addressed in your publishing agreement.
– Hybrid publishers: How image responsibilities are often shared, what you’ll likely need to arrange yourself, and how to budget for image costs in your publishing plan.
– Self-publishers, zinesters, and newsletter creators: How to find images you can use legally and affordably, and how to work directly with artists or photographers to create something original.
This program is a collaboration between The Loft Literary Center and Springboard for the Arts, led by Rachel Werner and Andy Sturdevant. Register via Springboard's website for this free workshop.
