Fiction with open book and stars

The traditional short story is dead, flash fiction has usurped it, and we only have time to read stories that can be finished waiting in the drive-through line at Taco Bell. However, don't confuse brevity for a lack of depth. Flash fiction is rapidly becoming the modern mode of storytelling.

This advanced workshop will focus on generative prompts for flash fiction, personalized feedback during workshops, and editing advice with an eye towards submission. Each week, we will learn about a craft element of flash—such as compression or ambiguous endings—and read a story that reflects our discussion. There will also be a generative prompt so that we can immediately practice our new skills. Most importantly, we will hold weekly workshops so that each student is receiving direct feedback from the instructor and the other writers in the class.

As this is an advanced class, students should have some familiarity with short stories and the workshop model.

Please email [email protected] at least two to three weeks in advance if you have any accessibility requests for this class.
