Class4-Week: Experimenting with Essay Structure
How do you decide what structure is right for the story you want to tell? In this class, we will break away from traditional narrative structure to focus on experimental structures like lyric essays, braided essays, hermit crab essays, and more. With the help of published examples by writers like Lidia Yuknavitch, Samantha Irby, and T Kira Madden, we'll discuss advantages and disadvantages for each form, how structure influences reader experience, and the wide-ranging possibilities within the essay genre. Writers will apply these techniques in their own work with weekly writing prompts and the opportunity to receive feedback on up to 2,000 words.
