Fiction with open book and stars

One of the primary things agents and editors look for in a promising writer is a unique “voice.” What is voice, what makes one unique, and how can writers foster this quality?

This 8-session class is open to fiction writers of all levels. We'll examine a breadth of writerly voices: from the lively, playful, and baroque, to the subtle and understated. We will explore the work of established writers for inspiration, examining their approaches and techniques. We will experiment with various techniques through short creative exercises. We will explore how to begin new projects, find your rhythm, access the flow state, and avoid blocks.

Throughout the course, participants will advance their own projects, either self-contained short stories or sections from longer works. Feedback from the instructor and your peers will be provided in class, followed by written feedback from the instructor. Above all, we will consider how to move from imitation to authenticity, nurturing a voice uniquely your own.
