Fiction with open book and stars

In spite of their brevity, flash and micro fiction can pack an emotional punch. This class will introduce participants to the basics of flash and micro fiction, focusing on two questions: How do writers contain a story to such a small space? And how do they give these stories emotional depth? Over the course of four hours, we’ll discuss craft techniques in published stories by Janika Oza, George Saunders, Jasmine Sawers, Tonia Hershman, Becky Ellis, and Jonathan Odell, followed by prompts designed to help participants generate their own flash and micro fiction.

The class will be a balance between craft discussion and generative writing time, with discussion of craft leading into prompts and opportunities for participants to share their work aloud with one another. By the end of the class, participants will have drafted the start of four pieces, and have resources to continue editing and exploring shorter fiction in the future. They'll have the option to send one piece to the instructor for written feedback after the class.
