For more than fifty years, the Loft has helped writers at every stage of their journey to spark and tend the fires of their creativity. We offer classes, mentoring, resources, and community for writers and readers to craft and to celebrate the power of poetry and stories for our world.

Every piece of writing begins with a spark, an instinct, memory, or question that won’t let go. We create welcoming spaces where writers can explore ideas, experiment freely, and trust their creative impulses. Through generative classes, playful exploration, and accessible entry points, the Loft helps writers light the first spark and imagine what might be possible.
Tend

Fire grows through attention. Through classes, feedback, mentorship, and shared practice, we help writers develop skill, confidence, and clarity. We also do this work to widen the circle and invite others in. Tend is about showing up, doing the work, and strengthening the flame through care, discipline, and connection with others.
Light

When a fire takes hold, it can light the way for others. We believe anyone who writes is a writer, but light is about the moment when writers begin to see themselves that way. Through youth programs, partnership opportunities, and pathways for emerging voices, we help writers build confidence, sharpen their voice, and step into their creative identity.
Gather
When fire is strong, it gives light and serves as a place to gather and shine. Through readings, publications, and conversations writers share their work and help guide others. This light is about generosity and reach—spreading warmth, insight, and possibility through stories and verse that travel beyond the page.
Fuel
Fire needs fuel to last. Through fellowships, fundraising, and partnerships, we ensure writers have the time, space, and resources they need to keep creating. By connecting voices across difference and experience, we help ensure that stories don’t burn out in isolation but continue to guide, challenge, and sustain us. Fuel is how we sustain the work, feeding the flame so it can grow, endure, and reach further.
