How to Build a Universe from Scratch

Have you ever dreamed of building a universe as rich as the one in Dune? Or Star Wars? Or The Left Hand of Darkness? Then this class is for you. Come with the glimmer of an idea and leave with a map of a new solar system and the beginnings of an interstellar society.

This one-session class will introduce students to foundational concepts in worldbuilding and genre writing. We will begin by studying contemporary examples of famous sci-fi universes, then we will apply what we’ve learned in guided exercises designed to help students create new planets, build complex societies, and devise strange and fantastical ecosystems. In-class writing prompts and exercises will give students a chance to play around in a sandbox as big as the universe.

Students will come away with a deeper understanding of the craft of worldbuilding and the start of new story set in a universe of their own creation.

All classes listed on the Loft website take place in Central Time.

Instructions for Accessing This Online Class

In order to access live class meetings, you must have the Zoom application downloaded to your computer. You will also need a WiFi/Internet connection throughout the duration of your scheduled meeting and a computer with audio and video capability.
