ClassHybrid Prose: Prose Poetry & Flash Creative Nonfiction
In this class, we’ll delve into the exciting experimental spaces between poetry and prose. The first session will focus primarily on prose poetry, and the second on flash creative nonfiction, allowing time along the way to discuss how these versatile forms can blend into hybrid prose.
We'll begin each session with potential definitions of these forms to ground our classwork. Then we'll explore multiple published examples together. We'll read short prose pieces from contemporary writers like Nay Thit, Victoria Chang, Shuly Xóchitl Cawood, and Ash Trebisacci. (Students need not read these examples in advance.)
Inspired by our group analysis of these examples, we'll create collaborative prompts, which may then be further individualized according to each student's particular needs or interests, for dedicated in-class generative writing time. Finally, we'll share our newly drafted work, if desired, for group feedback as time permits.
This double-session class is specifically designed for those curious writers who want to develop their practice of reading, studying, and writing hybrid flash prose.
By taking this class:
--Students will be able to deepen their general understanding of prose poetry, flash essay, and flash hybrid prose.
--Students will leave with 2-4 rough starts of their own flash prose, which they can develop on their own.
