ClassPoetic Plates–The Art of Letting Go: A Class for Writers of Color and Indigenous Writers
In this workshop, participants will release themselves from their past and embrace vulnerability through a meditative writing exercise using oracle cards. We will transfer our words from the page onto a plate. Participants will be given plates as a canvas to explore their artistic side and create an illustration of their poems using acrylic paint and sharpies. Remember not to hold on too tight-participants will partake in a powerful plate smashing therapy exercise to symbolize breaking free from past grievances, limitations, fears and frustrations. You will be joined by your peers and community in celebration of a new and prosperous beginning.
Bonus Opportunity: Participants will also have the option to submit their final poem to a special community poetry contest tied to Dralandra’s new book Before I Lie. Submissions will center around themes of identity, vulnerability, and healing. Select winners will receive a cash incentive and public recognition of their poem.
The class is offered on a pay what you can basis. Students may select the "pay what you can" option and enter any amount, including $0.
This class takes place in-person, at the Loft at Open Book; we encourage participants to be fully vaccinated and masked in the interest of everyone’s safety. Please see the Loft’s website for the most up to date information about the Loft’s COVID policies.
