What do Christopher Paolini, S.E. Hinton, Mary Shelley, and Helen Oyeyemi have in common? They all had a published story under their belt before they turned 20. If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing your book on the shelves of your favorite bookstore or your name in the byline of a literary magazine, this is the class for you. Whether you write novels, short stories, poetry, or creative nonfiction, this class will give you a beginner’s overview of what it takes to publish your work as a young writer.

Over the course of this four-hour class, students will be introduced to common methods for submitting your work for publication. You’ll learn how to know when your writing is ready to be sent out to publications. You’ll learn what a query letter is, what a literary agent does, how to write an author bio, how to find reputable publications to submit to, and how to learn and grow from rejections. And to top it off, you will try your hand at drafting a practice query letter for your favorite book, a hands-on way to discover what it takes to make a manuscript stand out from the competition.
