Writing Unlikable LGBTQIA+ Characters

In this 6-week class, we’ll explore what it means to be an “unlikable” character and who gets to be one. We’ll dig deep into LGBTQIA+ characters, associated tropes and stereotypes, the pressure for “good” representation, and the limits we can feel when writing.

Then we’re going to bust through it all. Through guided exercises, we’ll create unapologetically unlikable queer and trans characters. We’ll get these characters on their feet by writing scenes to discover how they really (badly) behave.

From there, we’ll use in-class prompts to develop arcs, discover the (very) messy actions our characters take, and draft short stories. Our goal: to be audacious and defiant with in our writing. We’ll also use time in our sessions to share excerpts of these stories to get verbal feedback.

A key part of this class is developing a close community so that we can support each other in learning and achieving our boldest character dreams. Writing unlikable LGBTQIA+ characters is our playground—and that includes those of us who have never written short stories.

Readings will include work by Roxane Gay, Kacen Callender, Anna Dorn, Bryan Washington, Kristen Arnett, Sarah Thankam Matthews, Samantha Allen, and others.

All Classes listed on the Loft website take place in Central Time.

Instructions for Accessing This Online Class

In order to access live class meetings, you must have the Zoom application downloaded to your computer. You will also need a WiFi/Internet connection throughout the duration of your scheduled meeting and a computer with audio and video capability. If you do not have a Gmail account, the email invitation will be sent to the email address we have on file and will prompt you to create a free account or enter an existing account to join the classroom. If we are unable to send an email invitation to your non-gmail account, you will be contacted by a staff member to provide a Gmail address.
