ClassWriting Young Narrators
In this generative workshop we’ll explore the craft of writing young narrators for memoir and fiction. These areas have a surprising overlap when writing from the point-of-view of a younger you or a teenage main character. We’ll touch on the difference between writing in a teen voice for an adult audience and writing in the “young adult” category.
The heart of our time together will include discussing examples from writers including Deborah Jackson Taffa, Alexander Chee, George M. Johnson, Nina LaCour, Malinda Lo, Lauren Groff and more. Our discussion will also explore the how-to of rooting voice and perspective in character (both real and fictional).
In addition, this workshop includes generative writing prompts to help writers develop their own fresh pieces or play with their works-in-progress. We’ll have time for in-class sharing and brief feedback to help writers develop direction to continue their pieces. All memoir, essay, novel, and short story writers as well as anyone who’s curious about writing “young ” are welcome!
